Design Charrete | ATM Redesign
A design charrette looking to redesign the interactions around using an automated
teller machine (ATM). In this project I chose to design for
PNC Bank due to the accessibility to their machines.
Oddly enough, I now work for PNC but not anywhere
near the design of these systems.
I began this process by diagnosing the current
workflow and analyzing some of the breakdowns that arose.
Below is the initial workflow of the current ATM system.
In addition, I have captured the current physical form of two of the ATM machines.
Please note the extreme difference of the two systems despite their proximity to each other.
(I apologize about the flash.
The ATMs are not placed in the best lit areas.)
From the initial workflow, I found many breakdowns.
One of the major breakdowns was a mismatch between the physical system and the screen interface.
The various physical forms alone complicated the interactions unnecessarily.
In order to move ahead, I chose to put a stake in the ground and to
design the system using a touch screen interface.
Furthermore, I would specify that the screen has integrated haptics,
similar to the Blackberry Storm , where miniature speakers
beneath the screen afford physical feedback to the user without a separate set of buttons.
Below is the new workflow for the PNC ATM kiosk.
Below are a handful of screen caps of the new interface.
